A 19-year-old passenger was killed while the driver, also 19, was hospitalized following a two-vehicle collision near Modesto on Tuesday afternoon, January 17, 2023.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash caused by the driver running a stop sign occurred around 4:15 p.m. at the Bacon Road and Jackson Road intersection.
The young adult driver was traveling south on Jackson Road with his passenger in a 2012 Honda SUV when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Bacon Road.
A 2018 Ram pickup truck heading east on Bacon Road collided with the Honda, sending both vehicles into an almond field in the area.
The male passenger from Modesto was declared dead at the site, while the driver was taken to Memorial Medical Center via helicopter. The Ram driver declined medical attention despite sustaining minor injuries.
Neither occupant of the Honda was reportedly wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. It is also unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role as the investigation continued.
Fatal Two-Vehicle Accident Statistics
Every minute in the United States, one person is killed in an automobile accident and ten more are injured. In addition to the approximately two million annual deaths among children and young adults under the age of 24, at least ten million more suffer injuries from these avoidable causes of death.
It is estimated that there will be approximately 10,000 fatalities due to traffic-related accidents in the Golden State of California by the year 2050. Predicting that these numbers will climb in future years is disheartening.
Since 2012, vehicle-related fatalities have increased by 23.5 percent. There were 3,898 fatalities and 279,223 injuries attributed to car accidents in 2017. The year saw nine deaths for every one hundred thousand riders on public transportation.
Every driver in California has a terrible story about a close encounter on one of the state’s dangerous roadways. Defensive driving methods and regular vehicle maintenance can lessen the likelihood of an accident.
