DUI Accident Statistics

Drunk driving is responsible for almost 10,000 deaths each year in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. About 20% of all fatal car accidents each year involve someone who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Every year in California, such incidents kill around 2,000 individuals and damage another 30,000. Already, drunk driving is a serious problem in this area. Drivers caught with blood alcohol levels above the legal limit will be subject to severe penalties.

Drunk drivers pose a greater risk to themselves and other motorists on the road because they are more prone to engage in risky behaviors like speeding, swerving, and other acts based on poor judgment. If you feel threatened or uncomfortable, you should leave the area immediately.

What to Do After a DUI Accident

Avoid making any assumptions or cooperating with investigators before consulting with counsel. Accident victims who suspect their driver was under the influence should contact an attorney without delay. Some victims of accidents may honestly apologize while still in shock. You’ll be giving the insurance company more reasons to reject your claim if you do this.
