Fatal Hit-And-Run Collision Statistics

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates that 680,000 people are injured or killed in hit-and-run accidents each year in the U.S. Recent studies show an increase in fatalities caused by hit-and-runs. These accidents caused 24% of all pedestrian fatalities in 2020.

Studies show that California has the highest pedestrian fatalities and injuries rate compared to other states. In 2012, there were approximately 14,000 injuries and 893 deaths among pedestrians in California.

When a car collides with another without stopping to offer assistance, it is called a hit-and-run. Since hit-and-run accident victims frequently go untreated or receive insufficient medical attention, the outcomes could worsen.

A pedestrian’s death or injury can be caused by drivers who suddenly fail to yield to pedestrians or brake.

To reduce their risk of injury in collisions, pedestrians should use sidewalks whenever possible, refrain from using drugs and alcohol while walking, and exercise caution when crossing parking lots and driveways.

What To Do Following an Accident

The first thing you should do after an accident is stop your vehicle. The law severely punishes hit-and-runs. If someone is killed or hurt in an accident and law enforcement is not yet on the scene, they should be immediately reported to the police or CHP. Any passenger in the car at the time must report the collision to the police or the CHP if the vehicle’s driver is physically unable to do so.

Move your car off the road if nobody has been hurt or killed. The police may impound vehicles that are not moved or removed from the road or street.
