Hit-And-Run Crash Statistics
Recently, pedestrian accidents have resulted in an increasing number of pedestrian deaths. Pedestrian deaths are alarmingly high each year.
According to recent studies, California has the highest risk of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries compared to other states. In 2012, there were over 14,000 injuries and 893 deaths among pedestrians in California.
A hit-and-run accident occurs when a vehicle is involved in a collision but fails to stop to render assistance (this includes drivers fleeing the scene on foot). In addition to the suffering and social and economic costs associated with injury accidents, hit-and-run accidents can worsen outcomes due to victims being delayed or not receiving medical attention.
A recent study found an increase in hit-and-run fatalities. In 2020, hit-and-run accidents accounted for 24% of all pedestrian fatalities.
Failure to yield to pedestrians or braking too suddenly is one of the leading causes of pedestrian fatalities and injuries. Pedestrians should use sidewalks whenever possible, avoid using drugs or alcohol while walking, and exercise caution when crossing parking lots or driveways. As a result, they will be less likely to be injured in these collisions.
