A hit-and-run crash resulted in the death of five people, and a driver was detained in Sacramento on Thursday night, February 9, 2023.
The fatal collision reportedly occurred around 5:27 p.m. on Highway 160 near the Freeport Bridge between Clarksburg and Freeport.
Authorities were notified of a call about a Cadillac Escalade crashing into a tree, killing three women and two men. A carjacking took place shortly after the crash.
The police chased the fleeing survivor in a carjacking and pursuit.
The chase started near the Courtland Bridge in the 8600 block of Highway 160, about 13 miles from the site.
The pursuit ended in Elk Grove near the Valley Hi Golf Course on Elk Grove Boulevard and Fire Poppy Drive.
After the fleeing driver crashed, the suspect abandoned the car and ran to the golf course before being apprehended.
It is unknown if the driver who was pursued by police was the same person who crashed the Escalade.
It’s also unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
One witness said they saw the initial crash on Highway 160, and when they stopped to help, the suspect carjacked them.
Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash Statistics
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 680,000 Americans are injured or killed annually in hit-and-run accidents.
More people have recently been killed in hit-and-run accidents. These incidents were responsible for 24% of all pedestrian fatalities in 2020.
According to recent statistics, California has the highest rate of severe injuries and fatalities among pedestrians compared to other states. In California, there were 893 pedestrian fatalities and nearly 14,000 injuries in 2012.
A hit-and-run occurs when a driver flees the scene of a collision between two vehicles without remaining to assist. In addition to the physical and emotional pain and suffering and the social and economic consequences of an injury accident, hit-and-run incidents can deteriorate when victims are delayed or do not receive medical care.
Vehicles that fail to yield to pedestrians or suddenly brake increase the chances of a pedestrian being killed or seriously injured. To stay safe, pedestrians should cross driveways and parking lots cautiously, walk on sidewalks whenever possible, and avoid drinking and using drugs while on the move.
What Should I Do After an Accident
The first thing you should do when involved in a vehicle collision is to stop. The law severely punishes hit-and-runs. If anyone is killed or injured in a crash, but law enforcement is not yet present, the police or CHP should be notified immediately. When a driver cannot report a collision to the police or the CHP, any vehicle occupant shall do so.
In the absence of injuries or deaths, move your vehicle off the road. The authorities may impound cars that do not move or are not removed from the streets or highways.
