Big Rig Crash Statistics
Every 15 minutes, at least one person in the U.S. loses their life in a crash involving a semi-truck. Around 500,000 trucking accidents occur each year in the United States, with approximately 5,000 truckers dying.
There has been a 22% increase in semi-truck accident fatalities between 2009 and 2015. Tractor-trailer accidents accounted for approximately 11% of all fatal traffic collisions in 2015.
Truck accidents in California are responsible for the deaths of 113 people each year and the injuries of nearly 3,000 others. Every year, between 200 and 300 people lose their lives in trucking accidents in California.
Tractor-trailer crashes are the most deadly when compared to other types of car accidents. This is largely due to the tremendous size gap between big rig trucks and other vehicles. The stopping distance of a huge rig increases by 20 to 40 percent when it is carrying hefty cargo.
Motor vehicle accidents involving large trucks are more likely to result in serious and potentially fatal injuries than collisions involving smaller vehicles. When a trucking accident victim can walk away from the incident with minor injuries, they are considered lucky.
