A couple and their dog were badly injured after a dog attack in Trinidad, Humboldt County, on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.
According to local authorities, the dog attack occurred on Ocean Avenue at Wagner Street near Edwards Street.
Ted P., editor of Humboldt County’s Senior News, and his wife Brenda C. were walking with their 10-year-old black Lab mix Stella when they saw a loose dog at Wagner as they turned into Ocean from Edwards.
The dog ran toward them and viciously attacked Stella. The couple managed to keep the dogs apart for a short time before Stella ran away with the 60 lbs. white and brown pit bull/heeler mix chasing after her, attacking her for the second time.
The couple with their dog was bleeding after finally getting Stella away from the pit bull with the help of good Samaritans in the area. The big dog’s owner then arrived before Animal Control authorities reached the scene.
Ted had the end of his finger bitten off and found in the street. Brenda banged her head on the pavement during the attack and was bitten in the calf. Their dog’s neck, face, and left front foot were all crushed. No updates were available on the dog’s current state.
The attacking dog was quarantined in the owner’s house while the authorities waited for signs of rabies before deciding how to classify her. The investigation continues.

In the event of a dog bite, the Humboldt County code states that a licensed and vaccinated dog may be quarantined. A hearing must be held to determine whether or not a dog is vicious, as required by the code.

Being vaccinated against rabies or taking other precautions may be necessary if the dog isn’t up to date on its shots. Canine puncture wounds are excruciating and can take weeks to heal.
