Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 5.2 million car accidents occurred in the United States in 2020. More than 30% of such accidents resulted in injuries (1.6 million), while less than 1% resulted in fatalities (35,766).

Fatal crashes increased 6.8 percent between 2019 and 2020, reaching 1.34 fatalities per 100 million cars in 2020. During the same period, the injury rate fell by 6.0 percent, to 79 people injured per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2020.

Drivers (67%), passengers (24%), motorcyclists (4%), pedestrians (3%), and pedal cyclists (2%) were the most common victims of traffic accidents.

Several vehicles are involved in a multiple-vehicle crash when a series of events leads to collisions between three or more drivers. Following an accident, up to six cars may become entangled in the wreckage.

Unlike traffic accidents, multi-vehicle accidents often result in fatalities, serious injuries, and property damage. If one loses control or has poor situational awareness, others may be injured. In most cases, the likelihood of such collisions is significantly higher.
