Motorcycle Crash Statistics
Around 8.5 million motorcycles were legally registered in the United States in 2012. This figure comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Motorcycles appeal to a wide range of people because of their excitement, freedom, portability, and affordability.
With the Insurance Information Institute statistics, it’s safe to say that motorcycle accidents have increased at an alarming rate. In 2018 alone, approximately 5,000 people were killed in motorcycle accidents.
Motorcyclists were still 27 times more likely to die in a car accident than people in passenger cars for every mile they rode.
Motorcycle riders often get road rash, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and bone fractures when they get into an accident.
So, why is it so dangerous to ride a motorcycle? Several factors are to blame for this shockingly high death rate. The most important problem is that there isn’t enough protection. Seatbelts, airbags, and the steel structure of a car protect its occupants from the power of an impact. On the other hand, motorbike riders usually feel the full force of an impact on their bodies.
