At least one person was hospitalized following an apartment fire caused by an e-bike battery explosion in San Diego on Sunday morning, April 02, 2023.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported that the fire explosion occurred at 6:09 a.m. in an apartment at 2900 Boston Avenue in Barrio Logan.
The fire broke out in the living room, where the couple reportedly charged their electric bike. The man attempted to douse the fire by pouring water on it, causing it to explode. He was taken to UCSD Burn Center with burns to his arms and legs.
The woman managed to escape the apartment and was given blankets as cover by their neighbors. It’s unclear whether she was injured. The one-story apartment was destroyed, and the unit above was damaged by smoke.
The Red Cross was requested to assist the victims. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported. Other batteries in the residence were removed by Hazmat investigators and the Metro Arson Task Force.
Authorities warned against inexpensive chargers and batteries in e-bikes that can cause fire and injuries. Dousing them with water should not be done as it can lead to an explosion.
