Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

America’s roads are among the most congested in the world. A total of 280 million cars are on the road in the United States, and 227.5 million people use them daily.

About six million car accidents happen in the United States every year. Over 38,000 people are killed in traffic accidents in the United States each year, making it the country’s leading cause of death.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 2015, there were 6,296,000 traffic collisions. Approximately 4,474,000 of these collisions involved two or more vehicles, with one vehicle accounting for 1,822,000.

One example of this is a multi-vehicle collision. The term “multi-vehicle collision” refers to a collision involving at least three automobiles. “chain-reaction” crashes occur when two cars come together on the road, resulting in a collision.

According to a recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study, more than 13,000 people were killed in multi-vehicle collisions involving passenger vehicles, accounting for more than 40% of all motor vehicle accidents each year.

A multi-vehicle car collision is most often caused by incoming traffic being unable to come to a complete stop when confronted with a single-car accident.

On highways like interstates, where traffic moves at high speeds, it is nearly impossible for approaching vehicles to avoid colliding with stopped vehicles involved in an accident.

Investigating a multi-vehicle accident can be a challenging task. Multiple drivers may be at fault for the accident. The car that set off the chain reaction that led to your collision may not have even been one you had personal contact with. Depending on the number of vehicles involved, many accident reports and hundreds of witnesses may dispute what happened and when it happened.

You should also contact an attorney as soon as possible following a multi-vehicle incident. If another person was to blame for the accident, the individual’s insurance company is likely to make a settlement offer.
