Multiple people were injured after a multi-vehicle crash in Encinitas on Monday, April 25, 2022.

[04-25-2022] San Diego County, CA - Multi-Vehicle Crash in Encinitas Results in Multiple InjuriesThe crash occurred shortly after 8:22 a.m. at the Via Cantebria intersection.

Officer Hunter Gerber of the CHP said officers from the Oceanside area were patrolling northbound Interstate 5 at Manchester Avenue when they saw a grey Nissan Sentra being driven erratically at a high rate of speed.

According to Gerber, the officers attempted to make a traffic stop, but the 19-year-old Nissan driver refused to yield, prompting a chase.

The car continued to elude CHP officers on northbound I-5 until it exited at Encinitas Boulevard and traveled eastbound for about a mile until it reached the Via Cantebria intersection.

According to Gerber, the Nissan ran a red light and made an illegal left turn toward northbound Via Cantebria as it approached the intersection. Two westbound Encinitas vehicles also entered the intersection at the same time.

A grey Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a 25-year-old Carlsbad woman, was the first vehicle.

The second vehicle was a grey Chevrolet Traverse driven by a 32-year-old Encinitas woman, who was accompanied by her two sons, a one-year-old and a three-year-old.

The Nissan driver collided with the Volkswagen and then with the Chevrolet as it made a left turn into the intersection, according to Gerber.

Gerber further reported that the Nissan driver and his passengers, all Thermal residents aged 16 to 20, were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries.

The drivers of the Volkswagen and the Chevrolet, as well as their juvenile passengers, were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Nissan driver was arrested on suspicion of reckless evading a police officer by CHP officers.

According to Gerber, alcohol or drugs were considered a possible factor in the collision.

The CHP cleared the intersection at 1:00 p.m.
