One woman was injured following a chase that eventually led to a crash in Gustine on Friday, April 29, 2022.
The crash occurred on a Friday evening near the Highways 140 and 33 intersections.
According to Gustine Police Lt. Sam Joseph, a Gustine Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle with expired registration tags.
The driver, later identified as Braulio L., 18, of Gustine, failed to stop and instead sped away.
A chase ensued, with Lomeli driving on the wrong side of the road at one point.
Lomeli eventually lost control of the vehicle and collided with another driver.
Lomeli’s vehicle flipped over and landed on its roof.
A female passenger in Lomeli’s vehicle was injured and had to be flown to a local hospital on a medical flight.
According to Joseph, the other driver was not hurt.
Lomeli was medically cleared and booked into the Merced County Jail on charges of eluding a peace officer, eluding a peace officer causing injury or death, driving on the wrong side while fleeing a peace officer, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon with intent to commit a felony, carrying a loaded firearm that is not registered, displaying a firearm in a public place, and being unlicensed. His bail is set at $221,360.
The Newman Police Department, the Gustine Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, the Gustine Fire Department, and West Side Ambulance all responded to the call.
