Fatal Big Rig Crash Statistics
These commercial trucks are essential to the California and national economies because they transport goods and products from our state to other states, ensuring that consumers and businesses have access to the goods they need to thrive.
However, there is no denying that these vehicles can be hazardous. It’s estimated that the weight of an 18-wheeler or a commercial truck is around ten times greater than the weight of an average passenger car.
According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation, big rig truck fatality rates have climbed by 30 percent since 2009. Around 4102 persons were killed in big rig accidents in 2017 alone.
Truck-related accidents are more common in California than in any other state. In 2019, there were 3,316 fatal accidents, which resulted in 3,606 deaths. The occupants of large trucks were responsible for 44 deaths in 320 fatal crashes.
The huge amount of semi-trucks and 18-wheelers hauling cargo in and out of San Diego and Mexico puts the city at risk of trucking accidents. Many California trucking companies put money ahead of safety.
Tire blowouts and mechanical error are just a few factors for a truck disaster. Due to their size, Trucks take up the majority of their assigned driving lane. Driving between them can constrict your space.
While you should always drive in your lane, putting yourself between two massive semi-trucks might leave your vehicle vulnerable and boxed in, with little room to react. This is why it’s important to leave ample space between you and a large truck when driving on the road to avoid getting into a fatal accident.
