[05-13-2022] Merced County, CA - Atwater Police Arrested a Man After Setting Fire to Occupied RV Injuring a Man Near Highway 99According to the authorities, a man has been arrested and accused of attempted murder after allegedly setting fire to a recreational vehicle and hurting a man in Atwater Friday, May 13, 2022.

According to Atwater Police Chief Michael S., The attack occurred at about 6:30 a.m. officers responded to a fire underneath the Atwater-Merced Expressway Highway 99 overpass.

It was discovered that an RV occupied by an adult male had been set on fire on purpose at what Salvador described as a “camp” of homeless people.

Authorities believe the arson was started in response to a property dispute in the camp where the RV was parked. Officers identified Jefferey D., 39, as a suspect in the alleged arson and obtained probable cause to arrest him during the investigation.

Drennen was apprehended later that day in the city, according to Salvador. The occupant of the RV was injured in the fire, according to police.

According to jail records, Drennen was arrested on suspicion of felony attempted murder, arson of an inhabited structure, and animal cruelty on Saturday. In lieu of a $705,000 bond, he remains in custody.
