Two-Vehicle Accident Statistics
The annual death toll in car accidents in the United States is shockingly high. Every year, two million people are killed in traffic accidents, and ten times that number are injured.
The National Safety Council reports an 8.3 percent increase in highway fatalities year 2020. This growth occurred following a three-year decline. In 2019, there were 39,107 people killed in car accidents in the United States. By the year 2020, however, that figure had risen to 42,338.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) cited data from the United States Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) that 3,847 people died in California traffic-related incidents in 2020. Fewer than half of the fatalities (1,587 or 41%) resulted from collisions involving several cars. 59% or 2,260 deaths were the result of single-vehicle incidents.
At least two cars were involved in 77% of all injuries, 71% of all incidents that resulted in injuries, and 72% of all accidents overall. In 2020, angle collisions accounted for almost 8,000 deaths.
