[06-06-2022] Kern County, CA – One Person Killed, Two Others Injured in Fatal Motorcycle Crash in South Bakersfield

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, a man riding a motorcycle was struck and killed in south Bakersfield Monday night, June 6, 2022.

According to BPD, the crash occurred around 9:20 p.m. at Taft Highway and Heather Meadows Drive.

The motorcyclist was seriously injured and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died later.

According to BPD, the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Taft Highway when a vehicle traveling in the same direction made an illegal U-turn from the right edge of the road directly in front of the motorcycle, resulting in the crash.

Two other passengers suffered minor injuries.

According to police, one was taken to a local hospital, and the other remained at the scene.

The Kern County Corner’s Office will disclose the victim’s identity at a later date.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the US Department of Transportation shows that 5,014 motorcyclists were killed in accidents in 2019. Motorcycle fatalities had been on the decline since the early 1980s, but in 1998 they began to rise again and remained stable until in 2008.

At 16 times the risk of injury and 35 times the risk of death, motorcyclists far outweigh those in passenger vehicles in crashes, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

There are nearly half of motorcycle accidents caused by drivers who fail to see the bike at an intersection. Because of their size, motorcycles are more likely to be involved in traffic accidents.
