Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the US Department of Transportation shows that 5,014 motorcyclists were killed in accidents in 2019. Motorcycle fatalities had been on the decline since the early 1980s, but in 1998 they began to rise again and remained stable until in 2008.

At 16 times the risk of injury and 35 times the risk of death, motorcyclists far outweigh those in passenger vehicles in crashes, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

There are nearly half of motorcycle accidents caused by drivers who fail to see the bike at an intersection. Because of their size, motorcycles are more likely to be involved in traffic accidents.

Motorcycleroads.com’s ‘Top 100 Motorcycle Roads’ section includes many of the state’s most popular routes. More motorcycles are registered in this state than any other. About 800,000 motorcycles have been registered in the state.

Motorcycle accidents in California resulted in 15,527 injuries and 541 deaths in 2017.
