[06-17-2022] Los Angeles County, CA - Four Long Beach Firefighters Injured in Apartment FireFour firefighters suffered minor injuries when fireworks exploded inside one of two apartments burning at a complex in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach Friday, June 17, 2022.

According to Long Beach Fire Department, Capt. Jake Heflin, the blaze was reported at 8:23 a.m in the 3900 block of Allin Street.

According to Heflin, the fire destroyed apartments on the second and third floors of the three-story building.

He said a strong explosion blew out part of the second-floor apartment’s windows and scorched the apartment above it while firefighters were battling the flames.

Several smaller explosions then occurred, Heflin said.

Heflin said two firefighters were initially taken to the hospital with minor burns. A third firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor burns, and a fourth complained of hearing damage due to the blasts.

The fire forced two people to flee their apartment on the third floor. Heflin said the second-floor apartment where the fireworks were kept was empty.

He said the flames were put out around 8:40 a.m.

He added that an investigation into the fireworks was underway.
