[07-16-2023] Los Angeles County, CA – Long Beach Hit-And-Run Driver Kills One Woman and Injures Another Man Riding on Tandem Bike

A hit-and-run driver struck a tandem bike, killing one woman and injuring another man, in Long Beach on Sunday afternoon, July 16, 2023.

The Long Beach Police Department and Long Beach Fire Department responded to the accident around 12:30 p.m. on 2nd Street and Marina Drive.

An elderly couple was on a tandem bike when they encountered heavy traffic. A driver of an unknown vehicle sideswiped them on 2nd Street, causing them to fall over. It is unclear whether the vehicle’s driver was aware of the collision as it drove from the scene.

Despite wearing helmets during the accident, they were transported to a local hospital. The woman died from undisclosed injuries, while her husband sustained minor injuries.

The woman was identified as 76-year-old Gaylin R. There was no other information about the people involved in the accident. No information about the vehicle that struck the cyclists or the person behind the wheel is available.

The collision is not believed to have been caused by speed, distracted driving, or impaired driving. Police are seeking dash camera footage of the collision as part of the investigation.
