A 63-year-old man identified as Ed M. was injured in a hit-and-run crash after a car collided with him at a Point Loma intersection on Thursday, August 18, 2022.
The crash occurred on a Thursday on Ladera Street.
The 63-year-old Ocean Beach resident was heading west on Ladera Street, which has no bike lanes, about a half-hour into his routine ride and a few miles from finishing it.
Maestas reported that he was traveling at 20 to 25 mph as he descended the hill on Ladera Street.
Later on, a car suddenly pulled out in front of him at Cordova Street.
Maestas did not expect the car to turn when he was coming up Ladera Street.
The vehicle reportedly turned without the blinker on as Maestas was coming down the hill. The car driver turned in front of Maestas and struck him.
His bike was seen on surveillance footage colliding with the car’s side at the intersection.
The car briefly stops before it drives away, as you can see.
Without a helmet, Maestas was struck and rendered unconscious before awakening in the ambulance.
He complained of pain in his ribs, shoulders, and head.
Maestas sustained road rash, bruises all over his body, bruised ribs, and stitches in his arm, but miraculously he did not sustain any broken bones.
The right side of the vehicle, possibly a black Chrysler Sebring convertible, is most likely damaged.
The San Diego Police Department is still investigating the crash.
Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
Avoiding responsibility for an accident by fleeing the scene is against the law. An average of one hit-and-run incident occurs every minute in the United States. There have been roughly 2,000 fatalities in hit-and-run accidents in the United States since 2006.
The number of accidents caused by drivers who flee the scene after causing damage is rising. Since 2009, there has been a 7% rise in the number of deaths attributable to hit-and-run drivers. The number of unintentional fatalities on the roads is rising, and a large part of the blame lies with the increase in hit-and-run accidents.
California had the highest rate of hit-and-run fatalities during this time. In 2012, 3,056 people were killed in 2,948 traffic accidents in California, accounting for more than one-fifth of all traffic deaths in the United States.
Damage sustained in a car crash can be very upsetting. A collision is already a terrible experience, but when the other driver refuses to stop and accept responsibility, the results can be catastrophic.
Because they are drunk, driving illegally, or afraid of arrest, these people are more likely to flee the scene of an accident.
