According to law enforcement officials, multiple fatalities were found after two small private planes collided in mid-air in south Santa Cruz County around Thursday afternoon, August 18, 2022.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a single-engine Cessna 152 and a twin-engine Cessna 340 collided while the pilots were on their final approaches to Watsonville Municipal Airport on Thursday at around 3 p.m. The Cessna 152 carried one passenger, and the Cessna 340 carried two.
After the mid-air collision, one of the planes collided with one of the airport’s hangar buildings.
According to authorities, the second plane crashed in a neighborhood near the airport, at the intersection of Buena Vista Drive and Calabasas Road.
A Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department coroner is on the scene. According to the FAA, no one on the ground was hurt.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board investigate what caused the accident. Firefighters, Watsonville Police Department officers, and California Highway Patrol officers are on the scene.
