Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

Vehicle Code 20001 and Vehicle Code 20002 are where most of California’s hit-and-run laws are written down.

According to VC 20001, it is illegal to leave the scene of a car accident where someone has been hurt or killed. If you break this law, you could be charged with a felony and sent to county jail for up to a year.

Under VC 20002, it is illegal to leave the scene of an accident without stopping and giving your information, even if no one was hurt and the only property was damaged.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2017 statistics, 2,049 people died from 1,980 fatal hit-and-run collisions in 2016.

In a traffic accident, every motorist is required to stop, and most of us wouldn’t think twice about doing so. Just the thought that some drivers have the guts to flee the scene of an accident is frustrating.
