According to local authorities, a 45-year-old male passenger and a 37-year-old female driver suffered severe injuries after a fatal single-vehicle collision in El Cajon early on Monday, September 12, 2022.
The accident occurred around 2 a.m. in the 1500 block of Greenfield Drive.
The 2020 black Chevrolet Silverado truck driver lost control and crashed into a retaining wall and a power pole in front of a house.
The truck driver managed to crawl free from the debris, but a passenger was trapped and needed help from the responding firefighters.
Meanwhile, the passenger passed away at the hospital. At the same time, the driver is still recovering from her wounds.
According to reports, no one was hurt inside the house, but the collision seriously harmed the front yard and the windows.
Police stated that it is currently unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the one-vehicle accident.
Fatal Single-Vehicle Accident Statistics
The most common cause of single-vehicle crashes is driver error—typically, these accidents occur when a driver makes a mistake and has a collision while driving. Other causes include tire blowouts, vehicle malfunctions, or other mechanical issues with vehicles.
A single-vehicle crash accident is a crash in which a person is injured, and the only vehicle involved in the collision is the one occupied by the driver. These accidents account for about 8% of all traffic accidents and are responsible for over 1,100 fatalities yearly.
More than 30,000 people are killed in the United States, and more than 2.1 million are injured in motor vehicle crashes yearly. 95% of people, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, do not buckle their seatbelts.
Prevention is key to reducing single-vehicle crashes: drivers should be aware of their surroundings and avoid distractions like texting or talking on their phones while driving. They should also maintain their vehicles to prevent mechanical issues that can lead to crashes.
