Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian accidents involving trains can be devastating. They can also be easily prevented, which is why it’s essential to understand the statistics surrounding these events and their prevention.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 4,743 pedestrians were killed each year from 2007 to 2016, and another 70,000 were injured.

In 2017, there were 5,997 pedestrian deaths nationwide—an increase from the previous year’s 5,977 deaths. To reduce this number and save lives, we must understand what causes pedestrian accidents and how to prevent them.

A study by the Federal Railroad Administration found that most pedestrian-train accidents occur at night or during low visibility conditions (e.g., foggy weather) when pedestrians have trouble seeing approaching trains.

It’s essential to understand the statistics behind these accidents so we can take steps toward preventing them from happening again.
