Bicycle Accident Statistics
Bicycling is gaining popularity as a means of transportation for short trips. Bicycles are a great option because they are cheap, healthy, and good for the planet. The incidence of bicycle accidents has, alas, risen in recent years.
An estimated 8,908 cyclists were killed in the United States between 2007 and 2018. To get an average, we multiplied this figure by 12. Sadly, 857 cyclists lost their lives in 2018. This is the deadliest year on record.
It’s no secret that California has a problem with a growing number of bicycle accidents. In 2018, 155 people were killed in bicycle-related accidents.
Bicyclists account for 4 percent of traffic fatalities in the Golden State. With a rate of more than twice the national average, California has the highest rate of cyclist fatalities of any state.
Bicycle crashes can occur for many different reasons. Common causes include distracted drivers who do not stop at stop signs or red lights, do not give cyclists the right of way, do not check for bikes before turning and do not yield.
