Car Accident Statistics

The United States has one of the highest traffic-related death rates per million people. The number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) peaked in 2016 but gradually fell to 1.11 by 2019, showing some progress in road safety.

However, traffic deaths rose again in 2020, reaching levels not seen since 2016. This increase coincided with the partial reopening of states after COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. Most fatalities involved people in cars and light trucks, though motorcyclists still accounted for a significant share of deaths.

In non-fatal crashes, drivers and passengers in vehicles consistently experienced the most injuries. This reflects the widespread use of cars and light trucks, which are far more common than motorcycles or bicycles.

From 2015 to 2016, motor vehicle injuries increased sharply, followed by a decline in 2017. Injury numbers then remained relatively steady through 2019. Despite fluctuations, the large number of vehicles on U.S. roads continues to make traffic injuries a major public safety concern.
