Fatal Truck Accident Statistics

Without commercial trucks, the economy could not run. Every year, the American trucking industry moves billions worth of cargo. The number of semi-trucks on the road puts other drivers’ safety in danger.

Semi-truck collisions result in the most fatalities compared to other types of traffic accidents. The size of large trucks makes them difficult to avoid.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) reports that since 2009, there has been a 30% increase in fatalities involving big rig trucks. In 2017, traffic accidents caused by big rig negligence resulted in the deaths of nearly 4,000 people.

Most fatalities and injuries from crashes involving commercial trucks occur in California. 3,316 fatal accidents occurred in 2019, leaving 3,606 people dead. In 320 truck-related collisions, 44 people died.

To prevent a collision, get as far away from a commercial truck’s blind spot as possible. This is the worst position to be in because the blind spots on the passenger side are much bigger than those on the driver’s side. Passing should always be done on the driver’s side when changing lanes.
