Burn Injury Statistics
Burn wounds are excruciatingly painful, take a very long time to heal, and can leave both physical and emotional scars. Burn victims frequently experience persistent emotional distress, such as PTSD or recurring nightmares about the incident. They might be reluctant to start up their usual routines for fear of suffering further burn damage.
In the United States, 1.1 million burn injuries require medical attention yearly (American Burn Association, 2002). Of these, about 4,500 people will pass away. Up to 10,000 Americans perish from burn-related illnesses each year in the United States.
One of the leading causes of accidental death and injury in the US continues to be burn injuries. Between 2011 and 2015, emergency rooms treated about 486,000 burn or fire injuries.
Long-term emotional effects from burn injuries can include post-traumatic stress disorder or recurring nightmares. They might be afraid to resume their usual activities because they are terrified of suffering another burn injury.
