In 2023, approximately 7,314 pedestrians lost their lives in traffic accidents across the U.S., representing around 18% of all traffic-related fatalities. This marks an alarming rise of nearly 80% since 2009, which recorded the lowest number of pedestrian deaths.

Hit-and-run accidents continue to be a troubling issue. Last year, one out of every four pedestrian fatalities involved a driver fleeing the scene. From 2014 to 2019, hit-and-run crashes accounted for about 20% of pedestrian deaths. However, this figure rose to 24% in 2020 and has gradually increased to 25% in recent years.

Looking at long-term trends, pedestrian death rates have decreased across most age groups. Children under 13 saw the most significant decline, with a 93% reduction in fatalities between 1975 and 2023. Teenagers aged 13 to 19 saw a 71% decrease, while adults aged 70 and older experienced a 73% drop. The only group with an increase in death rates is adults aged 20 to 44, where the fatality rate rose by 6%. Since 2009, adult pedestrian fatalities have been on the rise, while those for children and teenagers continue to decline.
