Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
In this country, hit-and-run accidents are viewed as serious crimes. If the driver is ever found, almost everyone will assume he is guilty and press charges.
Every day in the United States, at least one person causes an accident and then flees the scene. Since 2006, over 2,000 people have been killed in such instances. Sixty percent of them were foot traffic.
When a pedestrian gets hit by a car, every fifth time, the motorist involved vanishes. Common motivations for these drivers to flee include intoxication, driving without a license, and the fear of arrest.
Overall, the number of people who died in car accidents decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016, whereas the number of pedestrians killed increased by 27% during the same period.
Between 2009 and 2016, hit-and-run accidents were the leading cause of death in California. In 2012, 3,056 people were killed in auto accidents across the United States. There were 3,562 of these deaths that may be traced back to California.
