Car Accident Statistics

In 2020, more people died in collisions where they weren’t wearing seat belts, drove too fast, or were under the influence of alcohol, all of which are factors cited by the National Safety Council as contributing to a general decline in road safety that year.

For the first time in three years, death rates have risen again. The number of people killed in automobile accidents increased to 42,338 in 2020 from 39,107 in 2019.

Despite this increase, the rate of fatalities per 10 000 licensed automobiles dropped from 33 in 1913 to 1.53 in 2020, a decrease of 95%. In 1913, just 1.3 million automobiles were registered, and 4,200 people were killed in traffic accidents. There were 276 million cars on the road in 2020, resulting in 42,338 deaths.

There were fewer people (0.4% more), fewer cars (0.2% less), and fewer miles driven (-11%) in 2020 than there were in 2019. The result was an increase of 21.7% in the death rate per car, 8.5% in the death rate per person, and 7.9% in the death rate per mile traveled.

4.8 million persons in 2020 went to the hospital because of injuries sustained in automobile collisions. Injuries sustained in motor vehicle collisions were calculated to cost a staggering $473.2 billion. All factors are lost pay and productivity, medical bills, office expenses, vehicle repairs, and employer costs.
