Big Rig Accident Statistics

Trucks, being larger and more robust than cars, offer greater protection to their drivers in the event of an accident. The National Safety Council reports that as a result, those riding in very small vehicles are at a far higher risk of suffering fatal injuries.

Every year, truck accidents claim the lives of more than 4,000 persons in the United States. Large trucks are involved in only 2% of accidents overall but are responsible for 12% of fatalities.

In California, these truck drivers are restricted to no more than 55 miles per hour on any public road. The goal here is to lower the likelihood of collisions involving tractor-trailers. About 28,000 truck accidents occur annually in California, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. There were 9,500 people injured and 359 people killed in 2017.

In the event of an accident, the truck’s load may make things much worse. Toxic or combustible commodities, like gasoline, can be transported by large trucks.

If you’re driving behind a big rig and going less than 40 miles per hour, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration suggests giving yourself 4 seconds of space. Boost your speed and add another second.
