Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
According to the National Safety Council, motorcycle riders accounted for 14% of all traffic fatalities in 2020, 18% of all occupant fatalities, and 4% of all occupant injuries despite making up only 3% of registered cars and 0.6% of vehicle kilometers driven. The use of helmets has been shown to reduce biker fatality rates.
In 2020, there was an 11% increase in motorcycle deaths from 2019, with a corresponding 23% increase in the rate per 100 million vehicle kilometers. Over the past decade, the death toll has increased by 20%, while the death rate has increased by 27%. The current fatality rate is 5,579 for every 100,000 miles driven (a rate of 31.64).
California’s 785,424 motorbike registrations put it far ahead of the rest of the country. More than eighty-eight percent of all traffic fatalities and injuries in the state involve motorcyclists. Roughly 6% of these deaths can be attributed to head trauma from not wearing a helmet.
These statistics back up what we’ve always suspected: motorcyclists have a considerably harder time surviving an accident than car drivers. Compared to two-wheeled vehicles, four-wheeled automobiles are easier to spot and provide more road stability. Keep in mind that riding a motorbike calls for a different set of skills.
