One person was injured following two separate big rig collisions in the Newhall Pass, Los Angeles County, on Friday morning, December 02, 2022.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the first crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. between the 14 Freeway and 5 Freeway in the Newhall Pass.
A semi-trailer truck reportedly crashed through the barrier on the northbound lanes and fell over the side of the freeway into the truck route below, blocking the path before a tunnel.
The second crash happened afterward at around 7:24 a.m. when a second semi-truck also toppled over the edge of the freeway and onto the main crash below. It occurred just as emergency personnel was clearing the scene.
An empty SUV involved in the first collision was struck immediately by the second truck when it overturned.
One individual was transported to the hospital for sustaining injuries. Their current condition remained unknown. It was also unclear how many people were involved.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed there were no reported injuries and that nobody was trapped in the initial collision.
A Sig Alert was issued after the crash to allow for the cleanup of the spilled diesel fuel and the clearing of the site.
Big Rig Accident Statistics
In an accident, truck drivers have greater protection due to the larger size and greater structural integrity of their vehicles than those driving smaller ones. According to the National Safety Council, this is the leading cause of death among victims in passenger vehicles.
Over the course of a year, truck accidents claim the lives of more than 4,000 Americans. While only 2 percent of incidents involve large trucks, those accidents result in 12 percent of fatalities.
State law in California limits truck drivers to no more than 55 miles per hour on any state or federally-maintained road. The goal here is to cut down on mishaps involving 18-wheelers.
According to the state’s Office of Traffic Safety, a total of over 28,000 truck accidents occur annually in California. The 2017 numbers are staggering: 9,500 injured and 359 fatalities.
The truck’s load could make an accident much worse. Just think of a large rig hauling gasoline or some other highly combustible or poisonous substance.
