Authorities said a 26-year-old motorcyclist was sent to hospital in a car crash in San Diego on Thursday evening, December 15, 2022.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the crash occurred shortly before 11:00 p.m. at 10th Avenue and Market Street in the East Village.
Responders discovered the motorcyclist was on the Market Street eastbound lane driving his 1995 Harley Davison when a 2002 Cadillac struck him.
They learned that the 42-year-old female driver didn’t give the rider his right of way when turning left onto 10th Avenue.
The rider was sent to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds and a shattered pelvis, while the Cadillac driver was unharmed.
Anyone who may have seen the collision is urged to contact the San Diego police as their investigation continues.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Based on a National Safety Council report, motorcyclists were responsible for 14% of traffic deaths in 2020, 18% of occupant fatalities, and 4% of occupant injuries, although accounting for only 3% of registered cars and 0.6% of vehicle kilometers driven. Wearing a helmet would have prevented these fatalities.
In 2020, there were 23% more fatalities for every 100,000,000 kilometers traveled, as compared to 2019. Increases of 27% in the death rate and 20% in the total death toll can be seen during the past decade. There are currently 5,579 fatalities for every 100,000 kilometers traveled in cars (a rate of 31.64).
The state of California has the most registered motorcycles in the country at 785,424. To the tune of 88%, motorcyclists are responsible for the state’s roadside casualties and injuries. Accidents in which no helmet was worn account for about 6% of these fatalities.
The data supports our argument that it is more challenging to get back on a motorcycle than a car after being in an accident. With four wheels instead of two, you may travel more safely and with less effort. Consider the one-of-a-kind set of abilities that must be honed in order to ride a motorcycle safely.
