Elevator Accident Statistics

It’s easy to think that accidents rarely occur in moving elevators. There is no way that this happens once every million years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that thirty persons are killed and over seventeen thousand are seriously injured annually in elevator and escalator accidents.

In the United States, some 18 billion passenger trips per year are serviced by some 900,000 elevators. On average, 20,000 persons a year are moved in groups of five. To travel roughly 40 feet between floors, a standard elevator must go between four and five levels. About 27 persons are killed and 10,200 are injured in elevator accidents annually.

Many people get hurt yearly due to the unsafe design of these vehicles. These devices sometimes are untrustworthy and need adequate protection for their users because of the numerous moving parts and the lack of a secure method to hold passengers in place.

Half of all elevator-related deaths each year occur on the job, underlining construction workers’ dangers while working with elevators. By law, you must be provided with the training and protective equipment to install, maintain, or uninstall elevator parts safely.
