Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
We have strict laws against hit-and-run accidents. Daily, a hit-and-run occurs in the United States. Over 2,000 people have been killed on our roads since 2006, and 60% of them were pedestrians.
The drivers who flee the scene of an accident rather than help the victims account for nearly 20% of the total number of fatalities. Most of these motorists fled the scene because they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, had licensing concerns, or were afraid of being arrested if they were caught.
While road deaths as a whole decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by 27% during that time.
At the end of 2016, California had more people killed by hit-and-run drivers than any other state. A total of 3,562 deaths in the US have potential links to the Golden State.
