A 34-year-old woman was hurt in a collision with a deputy from the Imperial Beach Substation of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in San Diego on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.
According to Sgt. Robert Posada, the collision happened around 5:16 p.m. at the Coronado Avenue and Hollister Street intersection.
The sheriff’s office reported that a deputy was driving a department patrol car with its lights and siren activated to a “priority emergency call.” The deputy suddenly stopped at the eastbound lane of Coronado Avenue and Hollister Street.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the deputy entered the intersection after making sure there was no opposing traffic. According to the sheriff’s office, the woman arrived at the intersection from the Interstate 5 off-ramp at that time and was driving a white Ford Mustang coupe.
The Mustang was side-struck by the patrol car.
The driver, who reported experiencing back pain, was taken to a hospital for additional evaluation and care. The collision did not cause any harm to the deputy.
According to Posada, neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the collision.
Traffic Accident Statistics
Car accidents continue to occur despite advances in vehicle technology such as backup cameras, adaptive headlights, and forward collision systems (FCS). According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 36,560 people were killed on the roads in 2018, with 2.71 million accident victims requiring medical attention.
Whether minor or severe, accidents can drastically alter a person’s life. They can cause wage loss, pain and suffering, and permanent disability. Because traffic accidents occur frequently, it is important to know the facts.
Most traffic accidents are caused by decisions made behind the wheel rather than a lack of knowledge of how to drive a vehicle. Human error is responsible for approximately 94% of all road accidents.
Some drivers will find themselves guilty of some of the most common causes of traffic accidents at some point. On the other hand, raising awareness for these causes can help educate and, hopefully, influence drivers to be more cautious on the road. Start taking preventative measures by remembering these events the next time you drive.
