Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

Due to their larger size, trucks offer their drivers greater protection in collisions. The National Safety Council reports that this often leads to fatalities among pedestrians and passengers in smaller vehicles.

Annually, more than 4,000 persons in the United States are killed in collisions involving large trucks. Two percent of all motor vehicle incidents involve big trucks, but twelve percent of all fatalities.

California law prohibits truck drivers from exceeding 55 miles per hour on any state or federally-maintained road. This is done to lessen the possibility of serious incidents involving large trucks.

Around 28,000 truck accidents are reported annually in California, according to the Office of Traffic Safety. Over the course of 2017, 359 people lost their lives and 9,500 were injured.

Behind a big rig traveling under 40 mph, other drivers should allow themselves 4 seconds of distance, as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recommended. Please add another second at the increased rate.
