Authorities reported that a pedestrian was killed after being hit by two vehicles west of Rohnert Park on early Monday morning, November 28, 2022.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the initial crash occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. on Stony Point Road, just south of Wilfred Avenue.
The pedestrian was reportedly walking along Stony Point when a Ford Ranger traveling south drove up from behind and struck him when he walked into the road.
The driver stopped and called 911 after the crash. A second vehicle was believed to have later struck the pedestrian. The second driver, this time, did not stop. It was also unclear whether they realized they’d hit someone.
Responders from the Sonoma County Fire District and Sonoma Life Support declared the victim dead at the scene. His identity was kept private until his family was notified.
Anyone with information on the collision or the second car is urged to contact the CHP.
Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
In our nation, hit-and-run accidents are treated very harshly. If the driver is found, he will almost probably be held accountable for his actions.
In the United States, at least one hit-and-run incident takes place each day. Over 2,000 people have been killed in car accidents since 2006, with 60% of those deaths occurring among pedestrians.
Nearly 20% of pedestrian fatalities are the result of drivers who fail to stop and assist the victims of their collisions. The majority of these drivers flee the scene because they are either inebriated, have license problems, or are afraid of getting arrested.
Despite a 14% overall drop in traffic-related mortality between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by 27% during the same period.
California had the highest number of fatal hit-and-run accidents in 2016 compared to all other states. In the United States, there were 3,562 deaths that were specifically attributable to the state of California.
