Big Rig Accident Statistics

Truck drivers are safer than people in other modes of transportation or on foot because their vehicles are more robust. According to research by the National Safety Council, this is the biggest cause of mortality for motorists.

Over 4,000 individuals are killed in the United States in accidents involving trucks every year. Big rigs are involved in less than 2% of accidents yet cause 11% of fatalities.

On all state and federal highways in California, truck drivers are required to maintain a maximum speed of 55 miles per hour. In order to achieve the goal of reducing accidents involving semis, it is necessary to reduce the limit speed for these vehicles.

Over 28,000 truck accidents occur annually in California, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. The year 2017 saw the deaths of 359 people and the injuries of 9,500 more.
