Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian accidents are a common occurrence in the United States. In 2013, 4,735 pedestrian fatalities and an estimated 66,000 pedestrians were injured. These accidents can happen for several reasons, such as a driver not seeing a pedestrian in time or a pedestrian crossing the street illegally.
One of the most common pedestrian accidents is when a driver hits a pedestrian crossing the street. This type of accident can often be deadly, as pedestrians have little to no protection when hit by a car. Drivers should always be aware of pedestrians, especially near intersections or crosswalks.
On average, 927 pedestrian accidents occurred each year over the previous five years. Of those accidents, approximately 50% result in injuries, and 5% result in fatalities. Most of these mishaps occur late afternoon or early evening when visibility is reduced.
While there are many things pedestrians can do to stay safe, such as using crosswalks and walking against traffic, motorists are also responsible for sharing the road. Look both ways before crossing, and ensure plenty of time to cross the road before the next car arrives.
