Traffic Accident Statistics
Traffic accidents are a leading cause of death and injury globally. In the United States, for example, traffic accidents resulted in nearly 40,000 fatalities and more than four million injuries in 2016. While the number of traffic accidents has declined in recent years, they still pose a significant threat to public safety. Various factors can contribute to traffic accidents, including speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
No one ever expects to be in a car accident, but unfortunately, they happen daily. If you find yourself in a collision, it is important to know what to do to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. Check for injuries. The first step is to ensure that you and your passengers are not seriously injured. If anyone is injured, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately. Do not try to move an injured person unless they are in immediate danger of further injury.
Call the police. Even if there appears to be only minor damage, it is important to call the police so that they can make an official report. The report may come in handy later when dealing with insurance companies.
Exchange information with the other driver/drivers involved. Get the name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, and insurance information from the other driver or drivers involved in the accident. If there are witnesses, get their names and contact information as well.
Take photos of the damage to all vehicles involved and any visible injuries sustained by those involved. It is also a good idea to take pictures of the surrounding area, traffic signals or signs, and skid marks on the road (if present).
Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the accident and start the claims process. Be sure not to admit fault or sign anything without speaking with an attorney if you believe you may be at fault or partially at fault for the accident.
