Fatal Motorcycle Crash Accident Statistics
In Alameda County, there are a lot of motorcycle accidents. In 2016, 68 people died in motorcycle accidents in the county. The number is getting bigger. In most of these accidents, only one car and one or more motorcyclists are involved. Only six people died in 2015. Eight of the nine deaths were caused by vehicles hitting each other head-on. Most accidents happen between 3 and 6 p.m. on weekdays.
One worry from these numbers is that car and truck drivers might not be able to see motorcyclists and car and truck drivers. This can make it hard for drivers to see motorcyclists, which often leads to a crash that kills someone.
When accidents happen, many motorcyclists who die are not wearing helmets. This is most likely because no California law says everyone must wear a helmet. This means that riders who don’t wear helmets have a high chance of getting severe head injuries in a crash.
When riding a motorcycle, drivers can do some things to stay safe:
- Keep your head protected at all times by wearing a helmet.
- It is important for you to ensure that other drivers see you when you change lanes or turn and to use their turn signals when you turn.
- Drive carefully and pay attention to what’s going on around you.
- Never drink and drive.
The size of motorcycles makes them easy to miss for drivers. In an accident where you or someone else gets hurt or killed, you’re more likely to be drunk.
