One driver was killed after a multi-vehicle crash caused by an SUV driver from an earlier collision in Moreno Valley on Tuesday afternoon, February 14, 2023.
Reports indicated that the collision transpired around 2:00 p.m. at Alessandro Boulevard and Kitching Street intersection.
According to authorities, a 2010 Jeep Patriot was involved in a fender-bender near Bay Avenue and Perris Boulevard in which his SUV rear-ended a 2012 Mercedes E350.
The Jeep driver fled the scene, and the Mercedes pursued. Neither driver was identified.
When the vehicle arrived at the intersection, the driver saw a red traffic signal but did not attempt to stop.
At the same time, the driver of a 2019 Kia Forte traveling northbound on Kitching entered the intersection at a green light.
The Jeep was traveling eastbound at an unknown speed when it collided with the driver’s side of the sedan, which spun into two other vehicles.
The Kia driver was unconscious inside the passenger compartment, suffering from life-threatening traumatic injuries.
The victim was taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center, where he later died.
The Jeep driver, whose identity was also not revealed, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Nobody else required medical attention.
The Mercedes driver was interrogated and then released.
At this time, it does not appear that intoxication was a factor in this collision.
It was unclear whether deputies planned to arrest the SUV’s driver.
The investigation is still ongoing.
Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an automobile collision occurs every 60 seconds. California had over 3,300 fatal car accidents in 2016. Human error is responsible for more than 94% of all accidents.
According to the National Safety Council, one in ten Americans annually dies in car accidents. In California car accidents in 2019, 3,898 people died, and over 2,765,000 were injured. The number of fatalities and injuries from car accidents has increased by 23.5% since 2013.
A multi-vehicle accident occurs when three or more vehicles collide. Six cars tangled in wreckage could result from a car accident.
Multi-vehicle collisions are less likely to result in fatalities, serious injuries, or property damage than traffic accidents. Someone’s lack of situational awareness or control may endanger those nearby. In most cases, such crashes are more likely to occur.
What To Do Following an Accident
Following the collection of information, assuming it is safe to do so, it is wise to file a police report. By doing this, the police can keep data on what happened during the accident on a central database, keep those records on file within the police department, and ensure that information is kept in a secure environment.
You can file an accident report with your local police department via phone or in person if there are no police present at the scene of the accident. A police report will be compiled after the collision if the police cannot gather that information at the scene.
