What to Do After a Car Accident

A car accident is something no one can predict, but you can prepare for it. Carry a checklist in your glove box to help you stay calm and collected after a car crash. It can guide you on what to do, what to avoid, and how to protect your rights. You can follow these guidelines:

  • Stay Calm and do not admit fault. Stay at the scene and make sure everyone is okay. You should check yourself for injuries before helping others.
  • Get to a Safe Location and wait for the authorities. Please move any disabled vehicles to the side of the road. Please use your hazard lights to help prevent further collisions.
  • Call 911 to report your collision. Call the police unless the accident was minor and caused no injuries or property damage. The police can take statements, gather evidence, and compile a report about the incident.
  • Exchange Information with all parties involved. Keep detailed records of everything, including your wounds, the weather, the road, and the car that struck you.
  • Do Not Admit Fault under any circumstances, even to the police. Tell the police officer nothing but the truth about what happened.
  • Seek Medical Attention. Get in touch with your primary care physician or a specialist right away. Injuries may be treated less severely if given prompt medical attention.
  • Report to Your Insurance Company. California’s statute of limitations for reporting an accident to your insurer varies by company.
  • Speak to Insurance Adjusters. You can communicate with the claims adjuster, but you shouldn’t reveal any more information than is required. Do not give an insurance company a recorded statement or accept a settlement offer before speaking with an attorney.
  • Create a File. Gather and file all paperwork related to the incident, such as the police report, medical bills, details about the other driver, and plans for treating any injuries, in a case file.
  • Seek immediate legal counsel from a seasoned California car accident lawyer.
