Car Accident Statistics

In 2023, the United States recorded 44,762 deaths due to motor vehicle crashes. This represents a 3% drop from the year before and continues the downward trend from a high of 46,980 fatalities in 2021. Over the last century, traffic safety has improved significantly. Back in 1913, there were 33 deaths for every 10,000 registered vehicles. By 2023, that rate had declined to 1.57, even though the number of vehicles on the road had grown from 1.3 million to 285 million.

Aside from fatalities, vehicle crashes caused an estimated 5.1 million injuries in 2022. The financial toll from these incidents was also severe. When accounting for medical bills, lost income, and property damage, the total cost reached approximately $513.8 billion. These figures underscore the ongoing need for road safety initiatives and public awareness efforts.
