Pedestrian Accident Statistics
In the first half of 2024, drivers in the United States killed 3,304 pedestrians, a 2.6 percent decrease from the same period in 2023. This represents 88 fewer deaths than the first six months of 2023. Despite the slight drop, pedestrian fatalities remain significantly higher than in previous years, with 1,072 more deaths than in 2014.
The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) releases early data on pedestrian fatalities from January through June based on preliminary reports from State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs). Analysis by Kyle Hickerson, Ph.D., of Westat, shows that pedestrian deaths in the first half of 2024 are 12 percent higher than in 2019 and 48 percent higher than in 2014. Over the last decade, the increase in pedestrian deaths has far outpaced U.S. population growth, rising nearly seven times faster than the 7 percent population increase.
These numbers highlight the growing dangers pedestrians face nationwide and underscore the need for continued safety initiatives and awareness campaigns.
