Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcycle crashes continue to pose a serious road safety concern in the United States. In 2021, a total of 5,932 motorcyclists were killed nationwide. In California, 565 motorcyclists lost their lives, contributing to the overall national figures.

The number of fatalities increased significantly across the country, with a 7.7 percent rise from 2020 to 2021, highlighting the growing dangers motorcyclists face on U.S. roads. In California, the increase was smaller, at 2.9 percent, but it still underscores the ongoing need for enhanced safety measures and awareness programs for riders.

Motorcycles represent only a small portion of all vehicles on the road, yet crashes involving them account for a disproportionate share of traffic fatalities. These accidents are often more severe due to the lack of protection for riders compared to occupants of enclosed vehicles, emphasizing the importance of helmet use, safe riding practices, and targeted safety initiatives.
