Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
When three or more vehicles are involved in a crash, it’s considered a multi-vehicle collision. The term ‘pile-up’ describes an accident in which six or more vehicles are involved.
In multi-vehicle collisions involving passenger vehicles, more than 13,000 people die each year, accounting for more than 40 percent of motor vehicle accidents.
When dealing with weather conditions such as blizzards, sleet, snow, or fog, drivers are more at risk of getting involved in multi-vehicle collisions. Some of these accidents can result in severe injuries or even death.
The most common cause of a traffic jam is a rear-end collision, which starts a domino effect. When one car rear-ends another, the driver of the rear-ending vehicle is usually held liable for the accident’s consequences unless they were pushed into the rear of the other vehicle and had no choice but to be involved.
Almost all multi-vehicle crashes result in serious injury and substantial property damage.
